Travel Tips for Medicare Beneficiaries

Medicare Coverage Away From Home Depends on Your Plan Type

Whether your Medicare coverage travels with you depends heavily on whether you have Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage β€” and the difference matters a lot if you travel frequently or spend part of the year in a different state.

Original Medicare Travels With You Domestically

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers you the same way anywhere in the United States, as long as the provider accepts Medicare β€” no network restrictions, no referrals required across state lines. This makes it a strong fit for people who travel often or split time between two states.

Medicare Advantage Is Often More Regional

Many Medicare Advantage plans use networks that are limited to a specific service area, with limited or no coverage for non-emergency care outside that area. Some Medicare Advantage plans do offer broader travel benefits or nationwide PPO networks β€” but this varies significantly by plan, so it’s worth checking your specific plan’s out-of-area coverage before you travel, not after.

Emergency Care Is Different

Regardless of plan type, Medicare Advantage plans are required to cover emergency care anywhere in the United States, even out-of-network. The distinction that matters is routine or non-emergency care while traveling.

International Travel Is a Bigger Gap

Original Medicare generally does not cover care received outside the United States, with very limited exceptions. Some Medicare Advantage plans and Medigap policies include limited foreign travel emergency coverage β€” if international travel is a regular part of your life, this is worth specifically checking rather than assuming you’re covered.

Practical Steps Before You Travel

  • Confirm your plan’s out-of-area coverage rules before an extended trip
  • Carry your insurance cards and a list of current medications
  • Know how to access urgent or emergency care in the area you’re visiting
  • If you have a Medicare Advantage plan with limited travel coverage, consider whether a supplemental travel insurance policy with medical coverage makes sense for extended trips

Review Before Snowbird Season

If you split time between two states seasonally, it’s worth reviewing whether your current plan’s network genuinely supports that lifestyle, or whether a different plan option would serve you better during AEP.
