Top 5 Reasons to Switch Medicare Plans During AEP Now

AEP Is a Real Opportunity, Not Just a Formality

It’s easy to let AEP pass without action if your current plan seems fine — but “fine” and “still the best fit” aren’t always the same thing. Here are five common, legitimate reasons people switch plans during AEP.

1. Your Medications Changed

If you started a new prescription this year, or your dosage changed, your current plan’s formulary and cost tiers might not be the best fit anymore. A plan that was cost-effective for your old medication list can look very different once a new prescription enters the picture.

2. Your Doctors Are No Longer In-Network

Provider networks shift every year. If a specialist you rely on left your plan’s network — or you started seeing a new specialist who isn’t in-network — that’s a direct, practical reason to reconsider your options.

3. Your Plan’s Costs Increased More Than You Expected

Premiums, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums can all shift year to year. If your plan’s total cost picture has moved in a direction that no longer works for your budget, AEP is your chance to compare alternatives.

4. You Want Benefits Your Current Plan Doesn’t Offer

If dental, vision, hearing, or fitness benefits matter more to you now than when you first enrolled — or a competing plan in your area added stronger versions of these benefits — that’s worth factoring into your decision.

5. Your Health Needs Have Changed

A new diagnosis, a hospitalization, or a shift in how much care you’re using can change what matters most in a plan — sometimes toward more predictable cost-sharing, sometimes toward broader network access. Revisiting your priorities annually, not just your plan’s specifics, is part of a good AEP review.

Switching Isn’t Required — But It’s Worth Considering

None of this means you should switch reflexively every year. It means these are the specific, concrete reasons worth checking for before assuming your current plan is still your best option.
